Tips On What To Do After Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is the last resort if the tooth cannot be saved by other dental procedure. Here are some tips for patients to help in the healing of extraction wounds:
- Strictly take the medications prescribed by the dentist to promote adequate healing.
- To stop bleeding, firmly bite at the gauze for 30 minutes.
- Start taking analgesics/pain relievers as soon as you return home, well before the local anesthetic effect disappears.
- Remove gauze sponge after a few minutes and replace, if necessary.
- After the first 24 hours; gargle with warm salt mouthwash or Betadine Gargle thrice a day to avoid infections.
- Avoid rinsing the mouth too much to allow formation of blood clot in the socket. The blood clot contains all the healing factors to close the wound.
- To minimize swelling, apply ice pack 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off.
- Brush your teeth in the regular manner but be particularly careful near the extraction site.
- Avoid hot and spicy food and liquids.
- Refrain from alcoholic beverages and smoking.
- After extraction, eat only what you can manage or go on soft diet. Avoid using or sipping with straw for it will create pressure that may cause bleeding.
- If you have any questions, call your dentist right away.
